Articles

In class today we talked about all the possible options we have for our projects. How we can take a broad idea like Football and create an interesting angle on it by changing it to be something like ‘How has football changed over the past decade resulting in players wages and status?’ We discussed what topics we were interested in and could write an interesting piece about and tried to come up with an interesting view. I found it hard to think about what interested me at the beginning but looking at the news provided interesting ideas.

15th February 2013
The first article I read about the Oscar Pistorius case focusing on how South Africa had lost their ‘golden boy’, and the impact that it has had on South Africans. Pistorius, seen as a inspiration figure around the country, left many around the world shocked, South African’s refused to believe it. The article focuses on South Africa’s most beautiful stories, and one of their most inspirational men, that went badly wrong.

The second was a article from the Daily Mail describing the situation from the court. Laying out the facts it tells us that Hilton Botha, the leading detective filing against Pistorius, has himself been charged with seven charges of attempted murder. The article talks about the case and information from both the defensive and prosecution.  The world mocked him; the defense team of Pistorius leaped on this and used it as their advantage. He was then asked to step down as lead prosecutor by the Judge. This article was released when Botha released an official statement announcing that he had stepped down from the South African Police service. It was inevitable, and the article discusses the situation inside the Police service, which is valuable for my argument.

This article is extremely biased and requires you to chose the information you believe wisely, however it does stress a interesting point about the corruption of the South African Police Force and the situation that is going on behind the scenes. Whether you believe the information is correct or that it is too biased it does contain some haunting facts that, if true, could lead to the corruption of the police service in South Africa.

I find these three articles very interesting the whole story that has come out about Pistorius and what the government and police have been doing is frightening for many South Africans. The articles look at three different points of view about the situation.
The first talks about the impact the Pistorius crime has had on South Africa and around the world. Looking at it from a positive view, telling us that many South Africans refuse to believe it.
The second lays out the information about the crime. What happened, what was going on it the court at the time, and how the judge and defence responded about Hilton Botha.
The third looks at the situation in a entirely different light. It is a biased article from a small newspaper, trying to push their thoughts on the situation in Africa onto a wider scale. It tells us some shocking facts and asks us whether this could lead to South Africa's corruption in government and as a country.

The stories that came out from the general news as the story broke were confusing. At the beginning on the 14th February we heard that 'Oscar Pistorius had shot his girlfriend by accident'. Very quickly this changed to murder and then premeditated murder. Stories were coming out from the police, that neighbours had heard the couple arguing all through the night. That someone in the near-by house heard screaming, however this quote was then removed since the houses were too far away from each other to hear anything detailed. Many people have said that the South African police have been handeling this situation very badly; how apparently the police weren’t wearing projective clothing or gloves when entering the murder scene. They told the press stories that were then subsequently proved false. Perhaps this is laying out the facts to the world about how corrupt South Africa really is?
